The Caltech Field Laboratory for Optimized Wind Energy (FLOWE) was established with the support of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to demonstrate an innovative approach to wind farming that has the potential to concurrently reduce the cost, size, and environmental impacts of wind farms.

Ongoing research at FLOWE is also supported by the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation. These activities include meteorological, power, and radar measurements of up to 24 vertical-axis wind turbines in dozens of configurations.
